Mercan Dede, electro-sufi musician

Mercan Dede, is an accomplished DJ, musician and producer of electro-sufi music. His diverse mix of traditional music and modern beats has brought him a vast number of fans and critical acclaim across various cultures. Born Arkin Ilicali in Bursa in 1966, Mercan Dede moved into music after flying to Canada to teach Turkish oil painting art of Ebru. He gained fame using the stage name Dj Arkin Allen. After returning home to Turkey, he opened a new music studio in Istanbul and started producing under his name Mercan Dede.

Mercan Dede's latest album "800" is not only a breathtaking piece of art, but also mirrors the essence of Sufism with his harmonious combination of musical contrasts: the mutual antagonism as a part of the whole. Just as with “Breath” (2006) “Water” (2005) and "Nar" (2002), "800" has spent several months in the top 10 of the Europe World Music Charts, often at Number 1.

Mercan Dede has performed all over the world and at diverse big festivals (jazz, rock, world music, electro) all over Europe. He has worked together with various artists such as Peter Murphy, Natacha Atlas, Ludavico Einaudi, Trilok Gurtu and Coldcut. He has also composed the music for Pina Pausch and other dance choreographers.

Recognized as one of the most creative, unique yet modest artists in the world music scene, Mercan Dede will be touring Australia in November 2011
