Whirling Dervishes at Sydney Town Hall

Affinity Intercultural Foundation is bringing The Whirling Dervishes to perform at Sydney Town Hall to celebrate their 10th year anniversary. The Whirling Dervishes are a spiritual Sufi order founded in Turkey by the followers of Rumi, a 13th century poet, jurist, and theologian. They are actually known as the Whirling Dervishes due to their famous practice of whirling as a form of dhikr (remembrance of God). Dervish is a common term for an initiate of the Sufi path; the whirling is part of the formal Sema ceremony and the participants are properly known as semazen-s.

The Whirling Dervishes of Rumi will meet you at the Sydney's prominent Sydney Town Hall on Sunday 20 November 2011 7:30 PM.

The Sydney Town Hall stands opposite the Queen Victoria Building and alongside St Andrew's Cathedral. Sitting above the busy Town Hall station and between the cinema strip on George Street and the Central Business District, the steps of the Town Hall are a popular meeting place.
