Melbourne’s first Turkish female cop

Constable Yasemin SavranYasemin Savran became Melbourne’s first policewoman of Turkish origin when she joined 90 others at the academy being sworn in as constables last week.

A former primary school teacher, Yasemin was born in Melbourne but her parents had migrated 35 years ago from Turkey. Yasemin said she hoped to combine her experience in communications as a teacher with the skills she had learned in the academy.

Yasemin is the second woman in Victoria Police to graduate in the traditional hijab, following Constable Maha Sukkar who became the first constable to wear hijab when she joined the force in 2004.
