Turkish Superlig 2016 summer transfer wrap-up

Big spenders Fenerbahce sacked coach Perrreira who failed to help Fenerbahce qualify for Champions League and signed Dick Advoocat. Fenerbahce signed both 30 year old Al-Ahli striker Moussa Sow and 28 year old Sunderland winger Jeremain Lens on loan. The yellow canaries also signed 31 year old Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel for 6 Mill.€. The Istanbul team snapped up 28 year old Paris SG right-back Gregory van der Wiel , 28 year old FC Schalke 04 defender Roman Neustädter and 27 year old Besiktas left-back Ismail Köybasi on free transfer to close the gap caused by departures of wing-backs Gokhan Gonul, Caner Erkin and defender Bruno Alves.

Fenerbahce released their 31 year old midfield maestro Diego who decided to continue his footballing career back at his home in Brazil playing for Flamengo. The yellow canaries also sold 29 year old winger Nani to Valencia CF for 8.50 Mill.€

Superlig Champions Besiktas 22 year old Benfica midfielder Talisca and 32 year old Leicester midfielder Gökhan Inler both on loan. By signing Talisca, Besiktas wanted to close the gap caused by 31 year old creative midfielder José Sosa’s transfer to AC Milan for 7.50 Mill.€. Experienced Swiss-Turkish midfielder Gokhan Inler is expected to reinforce the Besiktas midfield.

Galatasaray was perhaps the team with the wisest transfer policy. They signed highly-rated but ill-tempered right back Luis Cavanda from Trabzonspor for 1.8 million euroes. The lions also snapped the 25 year old promising Bursaspor defender Serdar Aziz for 4.50 Mill.€ and the 28 year old Kasimpasa striker Eren Derdiyok for 4 Mill.€. Gala also reinforced their midfield by signing dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong on a free transfer. Galatasaray signed 25 year old FC Porto winger Josué and 26 year old Euro 2016 star striker Kolbeinn Sigthórsson on a season’s loan.

The lions slashed wages of their under-performing key players and released many others including Olcan Adin, Emre Colak and Umut Bulut as well as allowing Emrah Bassan, Ryan Donk leave on loan. They also made some cash by selling 23 year old wing-back Alex Telles FC Porto for 6.50 Mill.€ as well as dumping Jose Rodrigues and Blerim Dzemaili to Mainz and Bologna for small fees.
Trabzonspor kept it quiet this year. They allowed many players leave the club, including Ozer Hurmaci and Cardoso but signed 23 year old Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi for 3.50 Mill.€

Controversial transfers

2016 summer was arguably the most controversial transfers season in last 15 years. The 2 wing-backs of Fenerbahce, Gokhan Gonul and Caner Erkin, perhaps the best Turkish players in their positions, both refused to renew their contracts and signed for Fenerbahce’s rivals Besiktas. Fenerbahce responded by signing Besiktas’s left-back Ismail Koybasi. In particular, Caner Erkin’s transfer to Besiktas was very interesting. Caner Erkin first refused contract at Fenerbahce and signed for Inter and after a 2 month stint came back to Istanbul signing for Fener’s deadly rivals Besiktas.
