A double by Burak Yılmaz and a Serdar Aziz header gave Turkey its first win in Euro 2016 qualifiers against Group A minnows Kazakhstan on Sunday night.
Despite the victory, it was somewhat of a trouble-sum night for the Crescent-Star team as their key player Arda Turan received a yellow card and therefore is suspended for the next match against Netherlands in March. Also the veteran goalkeeper Volkan Demirel, couldn’t contain his emotions to protesting fans before the again and abandoned the stadium just before the game.
“Unfortunately, we did not start off well in the tournament, but it is apparent that we are going to pursue [qualification] until the end. Arda’s yellow card was upsetting,” head-coach Fatih Terim said. “But we are happy that we won,” he added.
In another Group A game, Netherlands beat Latvia 6-0, putting the Dutch in third position trailing Iceland and Czech republic.
The Dutch with six points sits right above Turkey with four points. If Turkey pulls off a miracle to win the next match against Netherlands, it will be in a position to hope for qualification.
