The transfer window this summer 2015 was particularly delightful for Turkish soccer fans. Many big names of European football have decided to pursue their careers in the Superlig. Here’s our Top 10.
10. Tomas Necid (Bursaspor)
Last year, Bursaspor had a great season but had to part with many players during summer transfer window. Fenerbahçe bought no fewer than four players of that team, star striker and top-scorer Fernandao, nifty winger Volkan Sen and full back Sener Ozbayrakli and promising midfielder Ozan Tufan. However, a significant recruitment has been conducted by the new coach Ertugrul Saglam. The Czech striker Tomas Necid was recruited to replace Fernandao. Necid is known in Europe for his time at the Russian club CSKA Moscow and is a regular on his national team.
9. Simon Kjaer (Fenerbahce)
The Danish defender was recruited by the Istanbul club to strengthen a defense that Fenerbahçe would play-off to play the Champions League. Ironically the yellow canaries were eliminated from the competition especially by the mistakes of Kjaer. Fenerbahce will continue their journey in the Europa League. Simon Kjaer is an established Danish international who already has 50 caps. Fenerbahce paid € 8 million for his signature.
8. Isaac Cuenca (Bursaspor)
Joan Isaac Cuenca Lopez is a promising player who was raised by FC Barcelona training center. He played no fewer than 30 games in what is perhaps the best team of all time, FC Barcelona Guardiola. He left the club to gain more playing time. This 24-year right winger joined Bursaspor after spells with Ajax and Deportivo La Coruna.
7. Stéphane Mbia (Trabzonspor)
Two times Europa League winner with the previous club FC Sevilla, Mbia joined the Black sea club this summer. The 29-year old player who plays as a defensive midfielder will contribute greatly to the team coached by Trabzon legend Sota Arveladze. The Cameroon international who first earned his cap in 2005, continues to wear the jersey of the Indomitable Lions today.
6. Lukas Podolski (Galatasaray)
Galatasaray had an outstanding season winning all the domestic cups; League Championship, Turkish Cup and the Supercup. The coach Hamza Hamzaoglu publicly explained that he didn’t want to transfer big names in order to keep a balance in its workforce. However the club’s supporters have widely criticized this policy. The only big name who joined the club this summer is German international Lukas Podolski. Podolski was recently crowned World Champions with the Mannschaft although he has not played in the competition. Podolski previously played for Bayern Munich and Arsenal.
5. Ricardo Quaresma (Besiktas)
Ricardo’s return to his second home. The Portuguese winger has already played for Besiktas between 2010 and 2013. With an impressive career including giants of European football such as FC Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea, Ricardo was one of the players in his country last season at FC Porto. We remember him for his double against Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals. He will be able to strengthen Besiktas as the Black eagles last season were dependent on Olcay Sahan and Gokhan Tore.
4. Mario Gomez (Besiktas)
German international striker who scored 25 goals in 60 games for his country signed for the Black Eagles. He was courted by Galatasaray but he made his decision to sign for the Istanbul rivals to replace Demba Ba, who left Turkey for a lucrative offer in the Chinese league. It is difficult task for Gomez to replace a player that Besiktas supporters had worshiped. Despite recovering from a serious injury, Gomez is still a world class striker.
3. Luis Nani (Fenerbahçe)
Fenerbahçe had the means during this transfer window and showed it by signing the Portuguese winger from Manchester united. The winger played under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United for almost 10 years. He has won the most prestigious European competitions, the Champions League in 2008 with a certain Cristiano Ronaldo at his side. He will now play alongside other Portuguese compatriots at Fenerbahce; Bruno Alves and Raul Meireles.
2. Samuel Eto’o (Antalyaspor)
Eto’o is undoubtedly one of the best strikers of the past 15 years. Few players can boast of having raised the Champions League three times. The striker’s accolades are just too much to list on this website. His 108 goals in 145 games for FC Barcelona, is enough to explain the talent of the player. Ate the age of 34, he can be considered old, however he showed he hasn’t lost his touch by scoring three goals in two games with Antalyaspor.
1. Robin Van Persie (Fenerbahçe)
There is no doubt that Robin Van Persie could still sign for a top-flight European club so his transfer to Fenerbahçe was incredible. Like his compatriot Wesley Sneijder, Van Persie adds great value to the Turkish Superleague.
