Istanbul giants Galatasaray became Super League champion for a record 20th time on Monday after arch-rival Fenerbahce ended up drawing 2-2 with Başakşehir, earning its fourth star over its logo.
The team had put its hands on the league trophy after beating Istanbul rivals Beşiktaş 2-0 in a derby on Sunday night and waited Fenerbahçe to lose points against Başakşehir. A 2-2 draw on Monday’s match brought Galatasaray the league title one week ahead the end of the season. Galatasaray now has 76 points and Fenerbahçe has 71. Galatasaray has an unassailable five-point lead over Fenerbahçe with one game to play.
It is the third time in four seasons the Istanbul club has won the title.
Both Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe had won 19 titles prior to this season and a 20th would allow the successful team to add a fourth star to their team shirts — one star is allotted for every five championships. Earning its 20th championship, Galatasaray became the first team to get the fourth star on its jersey.
