Cem Yilmaz is the most successful comedian of the post-video era in Turkish Cinema. He started his career in comedy while working part-time as a cartoonist at the famous Leman magazine during his university years. During his time at the humour magazine Leman, he started performing stand-up shows at Leman Cultural Centre and gained a cult-following due to his genius mixture of unorthodox observations and fearless stage performance.

He rose to national prominence when his spinning bald head was used in the Panasonic mobile phone ad first aired during Galatasaray – PSG European cup game.

No other Turkish comedians would know how to play the humour with the brains of his audience better than Cem Yilmaz.

His first stand-up video “Bir tad bir doku” (= a flavour, a touch) was perhaps the highest circulated VCD/DVD of all times in Turkey. The clips from this show are still the most popular on youtube or other video platforms although the show was made 15 years ago.

Apart from his stand-up shows, Cem Yilmaz is best known for his films Hersey Cok guzel Olacak (1998) G.O.R.A. (2004), A.R.O.G (2008) and Yahşi Batı (2010). He won two Sadri Alışık awards for his roles in Organize İşler (2005) and The Magician (2006).

Cem Yilmaz’s anticipated comedy Pek Yakinda(=Coming soon) is part of the movies shown at Turkish Film Festival 2014. In the movie, Cem Yilmaz plays Zafer, who secretly plans to shoot a film, starring his wife Arzu and return of a forgotten leading actor Bogac Boray to Turkish silver screen. The film is a 1977 sci -i fantasy referencing the bygone years of ‘Yesilcam” – the Turkish Hollywood.

Cem Yilmaz is also a close friend of the Oscar winning Aussie actor Russell Crowe. Yilmaz also played in Crowe’s latest Gallipoli themed movie The Water Diviner.

Hersey cok guzel olacak (Everything’s Gonna Be Great) – 1998

Cem Yilmaz’s first feature film, which went on nationwide general release across Turkey on 27 November 1998, was a major box-office success. In the movie Cem Yilmaz plays Altan, who after a series of unsuccessful business ventures, spends his time doing nothing until his wife Ayla separates their beds. He plans to win her back with a new business venture – a bar. One night he bumps into his brother Nuri (Mazhar Alanson) whom he hasn’t seen for years and who works in a pharmaceutical warehouse. Altan sees a way to make some money and before long the brothers are involved in a dangerous game. Altan remains optimistic in spite of everything that happens to them, but Nuri is a fatalist. Together, they struggle for survival, hoping that everything will be great, or better still, superb.

G.O.R.A. – 2004

G.O.R.A. is a science-fiction comedy film, which stars Cem Yılmaz as a used carpet salesman who is abducted by aliens from the planet G.O.R.A. The film, which went on nationwide general release across Turkey on November 5, 2004, was one of the highest grossing Turkish films of 2004 and was followed by the sequel A.R.O.G (2008). The movie also features an all-star cast including Özge Özberk, Şafak Sezer, Rasim Öztekin, İdil Fırat and Özkan Uğur.

A.R.O.G. – 2008

In this sequel to G.O.R.A. ,Arif (Cem Yilmaz) settles back on earth with Ceku(Ozge Ozberk) after saving the planet GORA. However, his defeated archenemy Commander Logar(Cem Yilmaz) has followed him and is intent on getting his revenge. He tricks Arif into a time machine and sends him back 1 million years into the past. After a series of adventures including an encounter with a T-Rex, Arif stumbles upon a settlement of cavemen. Arif tries to teach them about modern technology, but it appears that they are being oppressed by a rival tribe and their leader Kaaya. Kaaya tricks Arif into a do-or-die football-like game that is heavily stacked against them

Hokkabaz (The Magician) – 2006

In this light-hearted comedy-drama shot in Istanbul and Gallipoli, Cem Yilmaz plays Iskender who is a magician wannabe but everybody else except himself and his childhood friend Maradona, thinks he is a juggler. The two friends undertake a great deal of risk by including Sait to their tour program while they are forced to escape Istanbul. Moreover Father Sait had stop appreciating Iskender years ago. While the tour makes them come much closer, it also results in a magnificent fall-out. Iskender, Maradona and Sait, keep coming back together and falling out with their fellow traveler Fatma.

Yahsi Bati (The Ottoman Cowboys) – 2009

The western-comedy stars Cem Yılmaz as special agents tasked by the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire to deliver a diamond gift to the American President. The film, which went on nationwide general release across Turkey on January 1, 2010, was one of highest-grossing Turkish films of 2010. The title Yahşi Batı (“Mild West”) is a play on the term Vahşi Batı (“Wild West”).
